Police will normally check your identity, ownership and that you have valid insurance before authorising the release of your vehicle.

- Passport
- EU national ID card
Student, employer, or membership cards are not accepted.

Special Situations
Can't collect your vehicle?
If you’re unable to attend the police pound in person, someone else can collect the vehicle on your behalf, but they’ll need to bring specific documents:
Expired MOT?
If the MOT has expired, you may still be able to drive directly to a pre-booked MOT test, provided the vehicle is insured and roadworthy.
Vehicle not roadworthy?
Vehicles with serious defects or a PG9 prohibition notice must usually be removed by a professional recovery company.
What To Do If You Can’t Collect Your Vehicle?
If you’re unable to attend the police pound yourself, another person may be able to collect the vehicle on your behalf. They’ll usually need to bring the following documents when attending the pound:
- Evidence showing why you can’t attend (for example, a hospital letter or travel proof)
- A signed letter of authority from you
- A copy of your photo ID
- Their own valid driving licence and impound insurance
Named Driver Impound Insurance in Manchester
If the person collecting your vehicle isn’t the registered keeper or owner, they’ll need Named Driver Impound Insurance.
This specialist policy allows a nominated driver to legally collect and drive your car from the police pound , even if they’re not the owner.
Named Driver Impound Insurance is especially useful if:
- You don’t currently hold a valid driving licence
- Your licence has been suspended or revoked
- You’re under 25 and not eligible for standard impound cover
- You’re unable to attend the pound for personal or medical reasons
- We provide Named Driver Impound Insurance for situations like these — ensuring a trusted driver can release your vehicle quickly, legally, and without complications.
What to Do if Your MOT Has Expired
Normally, you can’t drive a vehicle without a valid MOT.
If your car doesn’t have one when released from the police pound, it usually must be transported by a recovery truck at your expense.
However, the Manchester Police Pound has some exceptions.
You may drive directly to a pre-booked MOT test, but you must show proof of your appointment when collecting your vehicle and go straight to the MOT centre without stopping.

If Your Vehicle Isn’t Roadworthy or unsafe to drive
If your car has been issued with a PG9 prohibition notice or is unsafe to drive, you’ll need a recovery operator to collect it for you. In London, the Metropolitan Police have a strict system , only police-authorised recovery operators are allowed to remove vehicles from the impound.
In Manchester, the system is more flexible. Recovery operators don’t need to be officially authorised by the police, as long as they have the correct equipment, trade plates, and are legally able to operate. The recovery company will collect the vehicle from the pound, not the owner. However, the owner still needs to attend in person with valid insurance and the required documents so the release can be approved.

Frequently Asked Questions – Manchester Impound Recovery
Here are answers to some of the questions we hear most often about Manchester impound procedures and getting your vehicle released.
How do I get my car back from the Greater Manchester Police pound?
You’ll need valid impound insurance, proof of ID, proof of ownership (V5C), MOT, and payment for pound fees. Then book an appointment through Operation Wolverine at Urmston Police Station before attending.
What documents do I need to release my vehicle?
You’ll need:
- UK or EU driving licence or passport
- V5C logbook or new keeper slip with a bill of sale
- Impound insurance certificate
- MOT (or recovery if unroadworthy)
- Payment card or cash for release fees
How much does impound insurance cost in Manchester?
It depends on factors such as your age, driving history, and vehicle type. Most drivers choose a 30-day policy, which you can get issued instantly online or by phone via our quote page.
Can I pay the pound fees over the phone?
No , the cardholder must attend in person. Payment is accepted by cash, Visa, MasterCard, or Maestro (no cheques or Amex).
Does the pound still charge me daily storage fees on days that they are closed?
Yes. Storage charges (£26 per day) continue to apply every day your vehicle remains in the pound, including weekends and bank holidays, even when the pound is closed.
Can I sell my car if the vehicle is in the impound?
Yes, but it must be released legally first. The buyer will need impound insurance, proof of purchase, and a letter of authority from you with your photo ID. You’re still responsible for any storage and release fees until it’s collected. However, you should always get permission from the police before selling a vehicle still held in the impound.
When is the best time to visit the police station?
Go right at opening on a weekday (Tue–Thu) for the quickest service. Call ahead to confirm the car is ready and what documents you need. Bring ID, registration, insurance proof, any police/tow reference number, and payment so you can get in and out fast.
Need specialist impound insurance?
We provide specialist cover accepted by UK pounds so you can get your vehicle released without unnecessary delays.
